A lot of places announce they’re “award-winning,” but Sona isn’t kidding: a Michelin star; Angeleno’s first-ever five-star rating; and, for chef David Myers, the honor of being Food & Wine’s 2003 Best New Chef. Not bad for a restaurant whose überminimalist trappings and runway-ready staff could mean yet another trendy-but-underwhelming exercise in style over substance. Sona is the real deal: an elegant, refined dining room for adults with modern French food accented with the flavors of Japan. Local, organic, free-range—you bet. Sona will never be your Sunday night go-to, but for some of the best dining in all of LA, this is the place.
Maine lobster risotto with shellfish emulsion and kaffir lime leaf
Seared foie gras with frozen banana, green tea cracker
Braised pork belly with white bean soup
Sonoma rack of lamb with goat cheese tortellini and basil pesto
Praline mousse with banana and birch bark ice cream
Not a bad seat in the house, and the soft acoustics mean always being able to hear the sweet nothings from your dinner date.
Sona really gets the fact that young French chefs are enthralled with Japanese cooking while their Japanese counterparts are equally in awe of Gallic technique. So why not two omakase tasting menus, the six course Découverte ($95) and the nine-course Spontanée ($145)?
