Gordon Ramsay and Boxwood Café at the London Hotel West Hollywood
By Nichol Nelson
At this luxe outpost in West Hollywood, Executive Chef Anthony Keene turns out sophisticated dishes that remind diners why Gordon Ramsay got on television in the first place. The dining room, designed by David Collins, is a somewhat incongruous blend of Hollywood glamour and Miami Art Deco: ubiquitous brass fixtures, pastel upholstered banquettes, and whitewashed wood-beamed ceilings. It shouldn’t work, but it does. Order up a London cocktail (gin, Lillet, fresh grapefruit juice, and cava), gaze out at the twinkling lights of the city, and prepare for the real show: dishes that change daily yet are constructed with such deft care that one would guess they were mainstays with years of perfecting. Take the beautifully arranged appetizer of duck confit, topped with a coddled egg that breaks open to coat the dish with its own rich sauce, or the perfectly caramelized, delicate scallops, balanced out by tender braised oxtail. To finish, you may luck out with a gorgeously dark caramel tarte tatin, with plump, sweet apples. If you’re in a more casual mood, duck into The Boxwood Café and order the burger; it’s always perfectly cooked and topped with a sharp slice of Grafton cheddar. Either way, the food and service will be first class. Ramsay’s crew knows they’ll hear about it if it’s not.

sweet seats

At Gordon Ramsay, you want to sit by the window. The restaurant has a phenomenal view of Los Angeles spread out below. It’s especially stunning after dark, when downtown turns into a real-life Emerald City.

chew on this

The bar tucked between the two dining rooms at Gordon Ramsay is a hidden jewel. Secluded and beautifully lit, it features a singer (Jill Boxberger performs on Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays) crooning one of the classics that makes it seems someone from the Rat Pack might stroll in at any moment.
